When we speak of bathroom remodeling we often talk about convenience or ergonomics. It’s also important to think about safety in the bathroom. It’s far to easy to get hurt, and according to the Centers for Disease Control close to a quarter million people get injured in the bathroom.
Here are some simple things you can do right now to keep yourself safe. First, get rid of those throw rugs. Throw rugs without a non slip backing are the number one way people find themselves on the floor. Any rug you put down needs to either have a rubber backing or add double sided strips to the back.
A handheld shower head will actually help keep you safe, too. By moving the shower head, and not your feet, you’ll find that you’ve reduced the amount of movement you make in the shower, and reduced the chances of a fall.
Low toilet seats can contribute, too. It requires a bit more of your balance to stand, and a simple toilet seat extender can make the difference for you.
All in all, don’t rush. We often say “I’m gonna hop in the shower,” and even though you’re not truly “hopping,” any kinds of rapid rushing around is a recipe for disaster.
