Not long ago, archaeologists in China were looking for treasure in a King’s tomb. Jewels, riches, and ancient art were nothing compared to what they found in the corner. A toilet. A toilet… in a tomb. A toilet… in a tomb, with running water – – and arm rests. But, make no mistake… this was a toilet in a tomb, for the late King to use in the afterlife.
That underscores the seriousness with which we take our toilets. While we may only spend 30 to 90 seconds doing what nature asks of us, but everybody wants that experience to be comfortable.
What’s most interesting is that nothing remarkable has changed in the function of toilets since that tomb was built in 206 B.C. It’s all the accouterments around the toilet that will make the difference. Something as simple as how the lights are arranged can make the difference between a pleasant experience in the “water closet.” Where the mirror sits, the height of the sink, and the distance from the shower to the towel rack can change the whole thing.
You realize somebody had to decide on the exact correct location of the toilet paper holder, right? What we try to do is make sure that all of that stuff not only “works,” but works right for what you need. That seems to be the place where people goof up. If all goes well, you’ll only have to do this once or twice. We will make new bathrooms for dozens of people every week. All these little things you never think about are the things that we deal with all the time. You might miss one of these details… whereas we know them like the back of our hand.
No, we haven’t been doing it since the days of the Western Han Dynasty, but we can promise that your “throne” will be worthy of a King.
